Last night sometime after 8pm our 3 cats ran out of the house. Gideon, our gray cat, knows how to open the screen patio door if there is a slight crack and not fully closed. Well, when Jason got home from bible study at about 9pm he found toby outside and we discovered all 3 had left the house. We found Gideon shortly after. My Mom and Dad walked over with flashlights and we searched for Nemo. We found him under the neighbor's patio and shooed him out. Nemo has always been a shy cat. He cuddled with Jason and I (and liked my mom), but no one else. He was very sweet, just shy and scared a lot. In his fear last night he ran to the back patio door trying to get in and threw himself into the glass a few times. One of those times, he shattered his rear right knee. He eventually dragged himself in and tried to go hide in the basement - which he basically fell down the steps. I was able to pick him up and could tell something bad happened. His paws were bloody and he wasn't using his rear leg. Jason rushed him to the animal ER and they determined he tore almost every ligament in his rear right knee. Surgery to repair was estimated at $2,700.00 - and that was without pain medicine and follow-up care. While we love Nemo a lot, it was just too much of a cost. Sadly we will loose him then. Jason asked what the vet would do if he couldn't afford the surgery and they said sadly he would have a poor quality of life. So Jason went and held him while he went to sleep. We'll miss you a lot Nemo.
Ahhh. Brings tears to my eyes, but I totally understand the decision. At least he won't be in pain now.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm so sorry! That's so sad! :( Poor guy. (((HUGS)))
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry Jill and Jason. Although I don't think I ever got to hold him, I know he was a sweet cat to both of you and the kiddos. My thoughts are with you!
ReplyDeleteAww...that is so sad! I'm sorry you guys had to deal with that.
ReplyDeleteWe will miss Nemo for a long time. You made the right decision because you love him so much as hard as it is.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear that, Jill. We had to put our 14-year-old cat to sleep at Thanksgiving and it was really hard even though it was the best for her. But she's no longer in pain now, so you made the right decision. ;)
ReplyDeleteOh Jill, I'm so sorry! I've had to do that in the past and I know how much it hurts the heart, even when the head knows it's the right thing to do. I'm sending hugs to all of you.
ReplyDeletewhat a pretty cat Nemo was. I hope that it's getting better each day for you, it's so sad to lose a pet. It's like one of the family. But you guys did the right thing and I hope each day you feel a little better.
