Lots of Boo-boos

This morning N&C were playing with me on our bed. Nicholas was standing by my side of the bed holding on to the headboard. And I was sitting right by him and I turned to watch Celia who was crawling to the other side of the bed. All of a sudden Nicholas started crying so hard. It was a hurt cry too. He was wringing his hands like something hurt his hand. I could see a red mark on his right pointer finger, but it looked like how he reacts to mosquito bites. I looked to see if he got a sliver or if a weird mosquito bit him? Nothing. I just couldn't figure it out. So I just held him and tried to soothe him. I put on his favorite video (baby signing time), offered him drinks, crackers, took a stroller walk, etc. He cried hard for 20 min, and then off/on during the stroller walk. Thats the hardest thing when you don't know what is wrong.
Well, they napped and he woke up happy so I was glad to see that. But I just knew it was something with his hand and I looked again in the afternoon and here there is a huge blister on his finger (where the pointer meets the palm on the lower part of the 3 sections of the palm side of the finger). His pointer and index fingers both are red and a bit puffy along with the blister. I figured out he grabbed the lightbulb on my bedside table lamp when he was standing by the headboard. :( poor little guy.
I called the pediatrician and the nurse said to keep the blister from popping, but if it does to cover it with a band-aid to keep it clean. Grandma and Grandpa Velicer are going to bring some Vitamin E capsules so we can put vitamin E on his blister/burn (supposed to help).
I had him carry around a bag of frozen peas to keep his finger cool. He also let his hand be under running cool water for a while too. If only I had known and done that earlier his blister might not be so bad.

We had another injury too. They were playing outside this afternoon and I watched as Celia truly RAN across the backyard. She can really run now. As she made a 2nd pass she fell and skidded on her knees. Her left knee skinned and a quarter-sized area started to bleed. She was crying and I needed to clean and bandage her so I put her in the house and ran to get Nicholas so he wouldn't be outside by himself. By the time I got Nicholas in she was in her room reading books happily as blood dripped off her knee. She is one tough cookie! I washed it with soap/water, dried it and put on a band-aid and that was it. Not a complaint - and she didn't mind the band-aid either.

On a good note.... I sat down and listed all the signed words and spoken words N&C can do as of today (right at 18 months). At this age sounds that are consistantly done for a word = a word.

Nicholas signs 26 words, says 11 words

Speaks: Daddy, baby, eat, uh oh, hi, ay yi yi, fish, moo= cow, funny noise = cat, ah ah= car/wheels, ack ack = duck
* he said daddy clearly today, copied me when I said 'ay yi yi' last night

Signs: drink, grandma, eat, sleep, frog, car, cracker, milk, diaper, potty, hurt, baby, bird, dog, book, ball, banana, swing, all done, more, please, plane, brush teeth, book, bath

Celia signs 14 words, says 9 words

Speaks: uh oh, baby, hi, outside, yay, kitty, arf = dog, funny noise = cat, ack ack,= duck
(baby and kitty she has said before, but doesn't much right now)

Signs: Grandma/pa, dog, ball, more, please, drink, eat, sleep, frog, milk, diaper, baby, brush teeth, wash hands

Nicholas has really just taken off with his babbling and saying a few words this last week. I know Celia has the skills to speak. But she is just not doing it much yet. I guess it must be developmental differences in the two of them. I hope she starts soon!

  1. I hope Nicholas' finger heals soon :(. That cracks me up about Celia. She didn't mess with the band-aid at all? So far we haven't needed to use a band-aid, but I can see my two trying to pull it off.

  4. Oh no! I hate to hear the "hurt" cries. They are heart breaking! I laughed when by the time you came back, Celia was happy reading a book. LOL How sweet! Isn't it something having to bring them in 1 at a time? I feel like my whole neighborhood watches sometimes as I bring the babies in 1 at a time after a walk or car drive.

  5. Isn't that so neat? Lindon said ka ka over and over for duck. We were looking through his cards and I made a duck noise a couple of times and he started doing it as well. When Daddy came home I pulled out the duck card and he did it again. It is neat how suddenly he seems to focus so well on listening to me and then try himself. He even colored for the first time today. I tried about a month ago a couple of times and he didnt respond that well, but it has clicked. I will post his picture.
Hope your little ones are feeling better soon. I know that has got to break your heart. It would mine.

  6. Yay, N&C! That vocabulary is GREAT!!!

Celia really is a tough one. Watch out boys!!! Daddy won't have to worry about her going on her 1st date. ;)

Poor little Nicholas. :( I bet it was so hard not knowing what was wrong. And he couldn't tell you... that breaks my heart. Did he sign "hurt"? I'm trying that one, but am not sure if L&D understand it. I've been accidentally falling or bumping into things and signing it. I know-- and the Oscar goes to...

  7. Jill, they are talking and signing so much that is awesome!! I didn't sign with Lexi and Skye (I'm not sure when it got more prominant but it wasn't then) and I can tell you it is soooo awesome for them to be able to communicate to you at this age!!!!
I hate that about having to get to both of them at the same time, I feel like I'm always yelling for someone to come help me carry one if I'm not home alone! I'm glad she was ok. She's a great self soother!
